Each year, the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association awards scholarships to qualified students in order to promote the long-term development and success of the horticulture industry.
The Marilu Johnson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to deserving students whose pursuit in horticulture will benefit the nursery industry as a whole. Additionally, the René van Rems Scholarship is presented to students focusing their studies in floral design.
Marilu Johnson Scholarship Fund
In 2001, the name of our scholarship fund was dedicated to Marilu Johnson to now be named the Marilu Johnson Scholarship Fund. To read why we honor Marilu Johnson with our scholarship fund, Click Here.
René van Rems Scholarship
In 2019 the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association added this scholarship to encourage young people to plan for a career in floral design. Throughout his career of 40+ years, Rene has been an avid supporter of the floral industry on a regional, national and international level. Recognized as an expert in his field, he is known to be generous in volunteering his time and expertise for the benefit of the industry and for various non-profit organizations.
Application Requirements and Information
Submit your online application below. Be sure you have your letters of recommendation, transcripts and video ready to upload at the same time. Only one application is needed for the Marilu Johnson, René van Rems and San Diego County Flower & Plant scholarships.
Prior to completing the online application, please gather/prepare the following documents:
- Letters of Recommendation – Two letters of recommendation. A recommendation from an immediate family member is not acceptable.
- Transcripts – We only need transcripts from your current program unless you have yet to receive a semester of grades, then please provide a transcript from your most recent prior institution.
- Video – Please supply a short video (up to two minutes) of yourself. In this video, please answer this question, “What kind of impact do you want to make in the world of agriculture? Tell us about the “aha!” moment that sparked your interest in the field, and how your current studies are preparing you for your dream career”.
- Other – Resume, activities, clubs, offices held and awards
